![]() British shoppers enjoyed an unexpected boost in March as retailers discounted their groceries - but the drop looks unlikely to last. The soaring cost of oil in recent weeks looks set to push food prices back up Special offers helped push down food prices by 0.5% between February and March - their biggest monthly fall since August 2009, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
![]() The price of staple groceries such as bread and cereal dropped 0.6%, and the price of fish and fruit was also down. Customers could buy cheaper clothes and beauty products as well, with the overall price drop for non-food items coming in at 0.2%. The BRC found an unprecented 40% of goods were sold with a discount. Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said: "Global commodities are still exerting considerable upward pressure on retailers' costs, but a greater intensity of promotions has led to a fall in year-on-year food inflation." |
