PSST! Want to save £50 a month? Well, stop wasting food. Stop buying punnets of peaches on Bogof (buy one, get one free) and not eating them, stop cooking too much spaghetti with your bolognese and then throwing it in the bin.

Stop your kids chucking away half-drunk cans of Coke. And learn what wonders you can work with that chicken carcass from the Sunday roast.

But, says the Local Government Association, the body which represents all Britain's councils and boroughs, the greatest thing we can do to prevent food waste is to stop bringing this extra food into our homes in the first place.

 

Because it's LGA members who have to deal with waste, in landfills and at recycling centres, they have totted up the collective bill. Which works out at £520 for each household.

LGA environment member Cllr Clyde Loakes says: "That is a heart-breaking figure in a world where hundreds of millions go hungry every day."
